fore invite attention to the following comparisons to illustr-

(a) Surveyors to Lloyds Register of Shipping who hold appoint-
ments of a somewhat similar nature to our own, but whose
work is subject to our approval as technical representa-
tives of the Government, in the same relationship as exists
at Home between Lloyds Register and the British Board of
Trade. A comparative statement of the initial salaries
at Home and in Hong Kong is as follows:-

It will be seen from the above that the salaries of
Assistant Government Marine Surveyors in Hong Kong
compare very unfavourably with those of Lloyds surveyors.
It should be noted that a Lloyds survey or is not usually
posted to the Far East until he has completed 3 years
service at Home, by which time his sterling slary here
would be 1840.
